FOREST
Performance Art Installation
by Audrey Alcala, Evan Lawson, featuring Megan Clune
On Wednesdays at 6pm:
25th February
4th March
11th March
Forest determines the defining point between the creation and completion of an art and music piece, and utilizes the process of creation as a completed work in itself. Visual artist Audrey Alcala, Music Composer Evan Lawson on the clarinet, percussion and voice; as well as Musician Megan Clune on clarinet and melodica collaborate in an improvised performance and live art piece. The fluidity and malleable nature of Forest has incorporated the constant changing of decisions in it's process, it's sound and the growth of the space aesthetically. Artists will play within their darkened abyss, assembling installations, creating music, interacting and responding to each other and building a shared artistic realm. The performance is divided into three consecutive sessions opening on Wednesday 25th February and continues Wednesday 4th and 11th of March 2009.
Bar Opens 6pm, Performance 7pm. Entry by Donation.
Audrey Alcala is currently undergoing her B.A Fine Art in Drawing at the Victorian College of the Arts. She has lately been focused on accumulation and release through areas of detailed intensity conflicting with space, emptiness and the abyss; through organic growths, geometric shape or figuratively. Audrey has exhibited at Camberwell alongside Melanie Neal and Leo Greenfield for the group show 'Documentary: Nostalgia' works on and with paper, and 'A rather lovely thing' with Paul Binetti and Matthew Greaves, as well as other Exhibitions held at the student gallery of VCA. The collaborative improvised performance Forest, with music composer Evan Lawson and musician Megan Clune will be her first live art piece, and the interconnectedness of their practice as well as the cross disciplinary nature will further her own artistic pathways.
Evan Lawson is a Melbourne based composer currently studying composition at the Victorian College of the Arts under Andrian Pertout, having previously studied under Mark Pollard and Kevin March. Evan’s work has been performed by the Melbourne Chamber Strings Orchestra conducted by Christopher Martin, the Melbourne Army Wind Band, in various solo and ensemble recitals throughout the VCA and at the BMW Edge Federation Square and Federation Hall. Evan has held principal positions in the Bishop Orchestra, Melbourne Youth Orchestra and Victorian Youth Symphony, he has conducted the VCA Chamber Orchestra and was the inaugural conductor of the RMIT Symphony Orchestra. Upcoming performances include working with the VCA Symphony Orchestra, Exaudi Youth Choir, Honour Choir, Victorian Youth Symphony and the establishment of a contemporary music Chamber Orchestra.
Megan Clune began playing the clarinet in 1996 and has since studied with a number of esteemed teachers. She attended St Andrews Cathedral School in Sydney from 2001 on a music scholarship, performing with pianist David Helfgott and playing newly commissioned works by Ross Edwards and Mathew Orlovitch with the school orchestra. Since leaving high school, Megan began studying at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, under the tutelage of acclaimed clarinetist Deborah de Graaff. While in Sydney, she performed with the Sydney Youth Orchestra in 2005 and in several master classes with Catherine McCorkill (the Australia Ensemble) and Sydney Symphony musicians Francesco Celata and Christopher Tingay. In 2007 Megan moved to Melbourne and is currently studying with Robert Schubert at the Victorian College of the Arts. 2007 also saw Megan perform in the VCA Orchestra led by Marco van Pagee and as part of the Melbourne International Arts Festival within John Cages’ Musicircus. In 2008, Megan performed in the Melba Festival with the Constanze Trio, which consists of Douglas Coghill on viola and Kay Chim on piano, and with Lyric Opera Company Melbourne. More recently, Megan was invited to perform as part of the “Live at the Convent” series on 3MBS. Upon completion of her undergraduate degree, Megan hopes to continue her musical studies overseas, gaining further experience in both solo and orchestral fields.
